wallpaper

It was by accident that I started using wallpaper in my art. I was making a lot of large sketches and had run out of paper. I started using some rolls of leftover wallpaper, painting on the back, but they ran out too, so I had to use the face of the wallpaper. I thought it would be easy to ignore the pattern, but it reacted with the images painted over it in such unexpected and varied ways that it couldn't be ignored. Sometimes it clashed with the image, sometimes the image seemed to pull the pattern into 3 dimensions, sometimes the two simply floated past each other on separate planes. I returned to the technique many times.
