landscapes

Most English artists are drawn to landscape at some point, but the English landscape has changed. The economy is no longer mainly rural, and most of us live in towns. So although some of the English countryside may look much as it did 200 years ago, it isn't really the same at all. I try to show how the old landscape of Britain has been beautifully preserved like something on display in a museum.

Traditional landscapes usually describe the terrain fairly clearly. You can see what and where things are. In fact topographical landscapes were used by armies to record unmapped territory as accurately as possible. My experience of places is quite different: to me a landscape is often more like a hall of mirrors than a map. This may reflect a sense of philosophical doubt, or perhaps just my lack a sense of direction.

I have uploaded four photos of the same piece - a 3D paper landscape - to show how it changes under different lighting as much as real landscapes do.
